How to Plan a First Look: Real Examples from NJ Venues

The short answer: a first look is a private moment when you see each other before the ceremony, with your photographer and videographer in place. It gives you time for portraits and most group photos before guests arrive, so you can enjoy cocktail hour. Pick a quiet spot with good light, schedule it about 90 minutes before the ceremony, and have an indoor backup in case the weather turns.
Where FNA couples have staged their first look
- On a winery deck: Mandy and Gene had their first look and private vows on an outdoor deck at Renault Winery in mild November weather.
- On the dock: Rachel and Thomas did theirs on the dock at The Camden County Boathouse, followed by group photos with water views.
- Overlooking the ceremony: at The Valley Regency, the first look took place above the outdoor ceremony space and was filmed from several angles to catch both reactions.
- By the barn: at Suydam Farms, two photographers covered the first look by the barn and the portraits that followed.
- With Dad: at Marina Del Rey and Crystal Springs Resort, couples also had a first look with Dad.

Have a weather backup
At The English Manor, our photographer captured a first look outdoors on a cool fall afternoon. For any fall or winter wedding, ask your photographer to scout an indoor first-look spot too, in case it is cold or wet.
Why two photographers help
When prep, the first look, and portraits are spread across a large property, a second photographer catches what one would miss, such as the reaction on the other side.

Want video of it too?
A first look is one of the best moments in a wedding film. See how FNA covers it on our photography and videography pages, and read how to get your best shots.
